The rollout of the EU's Entry Exit System (EES) has caused significant disruptions at airports across Europe, with wait times nearly tripling for non-EU citizens entering the Schengen area. This new digital system, requiring fingerprint and photo registration, has led to lengthy queues and missed flights for travelers.
One of the most affected airports is Rome's Fiumicino, a popular destination for UK and global tourists. Despite improvements, the time taken for UK nationals to pass through the border has increased from 7 to 20 minutes. Ivan Bassato, the airport's Chief Aviation Officer, highlights the complexity of the system and the need for urgent fixes.
"The integration with e-gates has helped, but we're not back to the efficiency of pre-EES times. We pride ourselves on our technology, so these long waits are unacceptable."
The issue isn't limited to Rome. Passengers in Portugal have also faced delays due to EES bugs. Superintendent Pedro Oliveira, in charge of Faro airport's border control, acknowledges the challenges, especially with the high volume of UK arrivals.
"The automated machines are usually the quickest, but sometimes a ten-minute queue turns into a thirty-minute wait. We're working to minimize these delays, but exceptional circumstances can still cause longer waits."
What makes this particularly fascinating is the technological aspect. The EES, designed to enhance border security, has instead created a bottleneck due to its reliance on automated systems and interconnected servers. A minor glitch in one country can affect the entire EU network.

As we move towards a more digital world, these kinds of teething problems are bound to arise. It's a reminder that technology, no matter how advanced, is still vulnerable to human error and unexpected challenges.
